It’s fair to say that most of us look at the total amount before we decide whether to accept a quote and go ahead with the job. But are you being overcharged? The way some companies produce their quotes and pricing is not always easy to understand.
When it comes to electrical work in your home, the true test is that the electrician who has carried out the job will leave your home in a safer state than when they started. When it comes to pricing though, how do you put a value on your home and family being safe?
Here at Doctor Electrical, we are always transparent with our quotes and pricing of jobs. However, we are aware this isn’t always the case with some contractors.
So, here are some pointers to help you when you ask for quotes. They will help you know what to expect and give you comfort that you are not being overcharged.
What’s included in your electrical quote?
- It’s a good idea to give the electrician a list of what you want them to do so they can use this to produce their quote.
- When you receive your quote, make sure it includes what you had asked for in a detailed breakdown of the electrical work to be carried out.
- Don’t just settle for one quote though. We would recommend obtaining three quotes so that you can compare.
- Take time to fully understand the quote from the start, to avoid any misunderstandings between yourself and the electrician. If anything isn’t explained fully and simply, ask them to clarify it.
What materials are going to be used?
- You might not know the technical details, but don’t be baffled.
- Also, remember that many of the electrical items fitted in your home, such as ventilation systems, fans, fuse boxes, downlights, etc, must comply with building and electrical regulations. If cheap or inferior products are used, this could result in an increased risk of fire or electric shock. Ask to see proof they comply if you are in any way unsure.
Remedial work may be more costly
- We have seen jobs where the electrician has walked out halfway through, leaving the customer out of pocket, and losing trust. Incorrect materials have been used for another job, and the customer has been left in an unsafe property – often with family to consider as well.
- Asking for shoddy or dangerous work to be put right is not easy, and for electricians, it is not a pleasant job to quote for. It’s often harder for us to put right something that another tradesman has already started than it would be to start from scratch.
- We are often required to quote for remedial work following an inspection – again, this could be more expensive than you would expect. But it doesn’t mean you are being overcharged. The cost depends on how much additional damage has been caused or the risk of any further damage, plus additional or replacement materials and time needed to put it right.
Don’t feel pressured
- Take your time to think about what is right for your home and consider the quotes.
- If you are not 100% sure, ask questions or even ask for alternative options.
- If you do not feel comfortable, you do not have to proceed at this stage.
- Asking for other quotes and pricing gives you the option to find someone else, so take time to consider all aspects within the quote. And remember the cheapest quote isn’t always the one to go with.
Does it look cheaper than you expected?
- This can be a ‘red flag’. We would recommend asking more questions, like how the work can be done so cheaply.
- Qualified professionals must issue certificates, source good quality materials from reputable suppliers, provide a high standard of workmanship and cover the costs of their insurances. So, on top of buying their tools, the running costs of their transport and their years of experience and time, if the price looks cheap, always question it!
Always remember electricity is not something you can cut corners with or take risks. So, make sure the quote isn’t extortionate compared to others. But on the other hand, if it seems too cheap and doesn’t feel right, trust your gut instinct, and go elsewhere!
